We believe birthdays should be celebrated all month long! This year, our birthday festivities began with an intimate dinner for 20 at Perrine. We followed the dinner with a festive tropical luau for 75 guests and concluded the celebrations with a twin dinner at Junoon. This week, we are excited to share our private dining experience at Perrine with you.
Perrine is the signature restaurant of The Pierre, a Taj Hotel located on New York’s iconic Fifth Ave. Perrine opened in 2016 and her name is the feminine form of Pierre. Perrine’s menu features contemporary French-American fare. The restaurant also offers modern versions of vintage Pierre classics. We’ve been to The Pierre many times for weddings and business meetings. More recently, we attended Perrine’s Summer on the Rosé Terrace in June and Diwali party in October. Perrine’s last summer Rosé event, Smash Bash, will take place on August 22nd.
We planned our birthday dinner with Executive Chef Ashfer Biju and Melissa of Taj Hotels. Chef Ashfer was raised in a family of restaurateurs near Kerala, India. He pursued a degree at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, California. Ashfer opened restaurants around the world including Napa Valley, Maldives, London and Southeast Asia. Chef Ashfer became the executive Chef of Perrine in 2016, where he manages a team of 50 cooks and seven sous chefs.
Our dinner took place in the gorgeous Rotunda room. This room is adorned with stunning gold light fixtures as well as beautiful handprinted murals of mythological characters and prominent members of New York society. Artist Edward Melcarth painted these murals in 1967. We were a party of 20, but the room could easily handle 35 guests for a seated dinner or 75 guests for a cocktail party. The room is perfect for birthday dinners, rehearsal dinners, bridal showers or baby showers.
The room has an imperial staircase, which is perfect for bridal party or group photos. There are many ways to enter the Rotunda, and some of our guests even entered the room by walking down the stairs. Talk about making an entrance!
It’s never easy to get 20 people to arrive at the same time. We always ask our guests to arrive 15 – 30 minutes before the reservation so that we can start dinner on time. Our waiter poured glasses of sparkling wine so that guests had wine to sip while the rest of the party arrived.
The restaurant staff set up a large rectangular table in the middle of the Rotunda. Inga from International Garden created our beautiful floral arrangements with blue gentiana, yellow roses and white dendrobium orchids. We started with a delicious sweet corn and basil amuse-bouche.
Chef Ashfer created a special multi-course dinner just for us.
The family style appetizers were delicious and diverse in flavor profiles. The apps were scrumptious but our favorite was the zucchini pizza, which was made with naan bread.
Each guest ordered individual entrees. We both loved the fish, but we heard the chicken was equally delicious.
Our waiter alternated the peach tart and warm chocolate cake so that guests could try both. We love chocolate so we were slightly biased to the chocolate cake. The pistachio nougat ice cream was a nice twist and paired perfectly with the cake. Chef Ashfer also surprised us with a birthday cake. The cake was a lemon twist on a Tres Leches cake.
