Who doesn’t love gummy bears? If you’re a fan of these gummy treats, you’re in luck! It’s incredibly easy to make gummy bears at home with organic fruit juice. Best of all, it’s a fun activity to do with children. Keira and I are very excited to share our gummy bears with you.
I first made Sugarfina’s rosé gummy bears for the Rose All Day party. These adult gummies were a big hit and I was excited to make a kid friendly version with Keira. With a few simple ingredients and these silicon gummy molds, you can whip up a batch of gummy bears in under an hour. These molds come in bright colors with three droppers. Silicone molds are the best because the candies pop right out, but you can also use plastic or metal molds.
Yield: ~100 gummy bears
- 1/2 cup fruit juice, such as apple, cranberry, grape or orange
- 2 tablespoons unflavored powdered gelatin (2 packets)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- Combine the fruit juice, gelatin and sugar in a small saucepan.
- Cook over low heat, stirring often, until the gelatin and sugar dissolve completely, about 1 minute (make sure there is no undissolved sugar stuck to the bottom of the saucepan). I
- Remove any foam that forms while stirring, skim it off and discard.
- Transfer the mixture to a small liquid measuring cup.
- Put the gummy bear molds on a flat surface and slowly fill each cup to the top
- Give each mold a small tap to ensure the mixture settles to the bottom.
- Refrigerate until the mixture sets, about 10 minutes.
- Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days
Homemade gummy bears lack the chemicals used to keep commercially produced gummy bears fresh. Make sure to store your homemade gummies in an airtight container in the fridge. Also remember to avoid serving the gummies to vegetarians. The primary ingredient, gelatin, contains some animal byproducts that many vegetarians will not eat. To make the gummies vegan or vegetarian friendly, swap the gelatin for agar powder. You can use the same recipe in other types of molds. Just remember that larger molds require more time to set in the fridge.
Next time we want to make a batch of sour gummy bears. Apparently all you have to do is follow the same recipe as above and lightly dust the tops of the bears with a little citric acid before cooling. The acid gives the gummies that sour punch that we all love.
